The pieces are placed on the points according to a specific initial setup: 2 pieces on point 24, 5 pieces on point 13, 3 pieces on point 8, and 5 pieces on point 6. The goal is to be the first to remove all your pieces from the board by following specific movement rules that depend on the results of the dice rolls.
What are the rules of Backgammon?- Dice Roll: Each player rolls a die to determine who goes first. The player with the highest number starts.
- Movement of Pieces: Players roll two dice and move their pieces according to the numbers rolled. Pieces move counterclockwise for one player and clockwise for the other.
- Movement Rules:
A piece can move to an empty point or one occupied by its own pieces.
A piece cannot move to a point occupied by two or more opposing pieces.
If a player rolls a double (two identical numbers), they play each number twice.
- Hits: If a piece lands on a point occupied by a single opposing piece, that piece is 'hit' and placed on the bar. The player whose piece was hit must re-enter it into their home board before they can move other pieces.
- Bearing Off: Once all of a player's pieces are in their home board, they can start bearing them off the board based on the numbers rolled on the dice.
- End of Game:
The first player to bear off all their pieces wins the game.
If a player has not borne off any pieces when their opponent has borne off all of theirs, they lose a 'gammon' (double the points).
If a player has not borne off any pieces and still has pieces in the opponent's home board or on the bar, they lose a 'backgammon' (triple the points).
